Leeds linked with PSV left-back Philipp Max - Leeds Press 12/12/22

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing PSV Eindhoven left-back Philipp Max in the upcoming January transfer window, as per a report from Football Insider.

With the World Cup in Qatar nearing its conclusion, and England having left the competition at the hands of France on Saturday evening [10 December], many Whites supporters’ thoughts are turning back to domestic football and – more specifically – the mid-season trading window.

This period offers the club the opportunity to strengthen areas of the squad which are perceived to be lacking in depth, particularly the striker and left-back positions.

Natural left-back Junior Firpo, signed from Barcelona in the 2021 summer transfer window, has been ravaged by injury and hasn’t really impressed in the role when fit.

Currently, Leeds boss Jesse Marsch favours natural centre-back Pascal Struijk in the full-back position even when Firpo is available, which is indicative of his failure to claim a consistent place in the squad.

Despite Phil Hay of The Athletic recently reporting that the Whites were in the market for a young left-back who had potential to develop – which saw them linked to the 19-year-old Jesus Vazquez among others – 29-year-old Max offers a more immediate remedy to the Yorkshire club’s left-back woes.

The German has a wealth of experience, featuring regularly for not only PSV in the Eredivisie but his prior club Augsburg FC in the Bundesliga, and has won three caps in his career.

Football Insider’s report states that PSV’s current financial difficulties provide a reason for the Dutch club to put Max, who currently earns £30,000 p/w, up for sale.

His contract is also set to expire in 2024, which may further incentivise PSV to sell him before his price potentially plummets.

Max could be a great signing for Leeds, if the board can pull it off.

He would bring with him not just quality, but experience, something which can either make or break a Premier League defender.

Averaging 1.4 tackles per game in the Eredivisie so far this season, the German international could prove crucial in fixing a defence which, prior to the mid-season World Cup break, was leaking goals.

As well as defensive stability, Max also brings offensive threat, as suggested by the 2 assists he already has to his name at PSV this term. In his 2020/21 season with the Dutch giants, he scored 5 and assisted 8 in 31 appearances.

This is certainly one to watch; a realistic target who should be well within the Whites’ price range.
