Darko Gyabi looking to follow in Tyler Adams’ footsteps - Leeds Press 15/12/22

Leeds youngster Darko Gyabi says he is ready and waiting for his chance at the first team.

The 18-year old arrived at the club this summer from Manchester City. Gyabi is a highly rated talent and starred in Man City team that won the Premier League 2 last season.

The midfielder is yet to play first team football in the Premier League, but has one appearance against Wolves in the EFL Cup last month. Regardless, the youngster is unfazed and is ready for his chance:

“Football is weird,” he said. “Anything can happen. You could be training and then maybe an injury or illness and you’re in it.”

“It’s not about feeling closer [than I did at Man City], it’s just being ready for when you do get that chance and I just need to keep learning and training hard so when that chance comes it’s an easier transition for me.”

Gyabi climbed the ranks quickly from the Under-21 to the senior team squad under Jesse Marsch. Sonny Perkins, Mateo Joseph and Archie Gray also praise Gyabi’s potential to be a first team player. The 18-year old says being among the young core of the club is a good thing for Leeds’ future:

“With Sam (Greenwood), Joffy (Joe Gelhardt), all the other players as well, there’s an opportunity if you’re ready for the challenge, but it’s another thing being ready for the challenge,” he said. “It’s not just the opportunity, but you also have to take the opportunity when you do get it.”

With Leeds set to lose Matuesz Klich in January and the injury problems of Adam Forshaw, a spot behind the midfield duo of Adams and Roca might be open anytime soon. Darko Gyabi says he is ready for the chance.
