Sources: Leeds rejected Greenwood bids from six clubs - Football Insider 3/9/21

Leeds United rejected multiple offers for attacker Sam Greenwood before the transfer window closed, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Six Championship clubs tried to sign the 19-year-old before deadline day only for United to reject all interest.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Greenwood also wanted to stay at Leeds and part of the reason was that the club did not recruit a senior striker during the window.

It is believed that Swansea City and Bournemouth were among the six sides trying to lure the teenager.

United have demonstrated great faith in their young talent by not only keeping hold of them but also offloading more experienced forwards.

Helder Costa signed for Valencia on a loan-to-buy deadline-day deal, while Ian Poveda headed to Blackburn Rovers on loan.

Football Insider revealed yesterday that another 19-year-old Leeds attacker, Crysencio Summerville, was also the subject of extensive interest that was knocked back by the club.

Chief executive Angus Kinnear revealed in his programme notes on 23rd August that Leeds had “vigorously resisted” over £100million of interest in their players this summer.

Greenwood was signed from Arsenal in the summer of 2020 for a fee that could eventually rise to £3million if all add-ons are achieved.

He made his debut in the FA Cup for Leeds last season and also finished top scorer for their Under-23s in their title-winning campaign.

In the new season, Greenwood was on the substitute’s bench for Leeds’ opening-day Premier League defeat at Man United.

He has also scored one goal and assisted another in two starts for the Under-23s in Premier League 2.
