Leeds 0 Fulham 0 - BBC 21/9/21
Leeds United beat Fulham 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
The home side had the better of the chances in the first
half, with Neeskens Kebano forcing a good save from Meslier from a free-kick.
Chances were at a premium after the break as both sides were
forced to settle for penalties.
Leeds took an early advantage in the shootout when Josh
Onomah hit the crossbar with Fulham's first kick.
Stuart Dallas' effort drew a wonderful save from Marek Rodak
in the home goal but Joe Bryan then sent his effort way over the bar to give
Adam Forshaw the chance to win it with Leeds' fourth penalty.
However, Forshaw also blasted his kick over as the shootout
went to sudden death. After two more rounds of successful penalties, Brazilian
Muniz saw his low effort kept out by Meslier.
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, who was booked during the second
half, will hope his side can now carry the positivity from this result into the
league as they search for a first Premier League win of the season against West
Ham on Saturday, while Fulham visit Bristol City.
Fulham boss Marco Silva:
"When I made 11 changes in the starting XI and I saw
our team match our opponent like we did this evening - of course I'm not happy
with the result - like all of us I think we deserved something more from the
game.
"But the result is what it is, but we have to be proud
of our players and what they did and how they played for the 95 minutes, with
very good intensity in some moments of the game.
"Unfortunately in the penalties they were more
competent than us, because for me it's not just a matter of luck or not."
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa:
"It was difficult for us. We conceded too many chances
to the opponent. It was difficult for all our players."
"The young players showed personality and character.
Joe Gelhardt had missed his last two penalties and took on board the
responsibility and managed to score and Stuart McKinstry also had to take one
in the most decisive moments and they showed character."
