Patrick Bamford's goal celebration explained as Leeds United striker details lightning bolt move - Leeds Live 2/9/21
Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford has explained the reasoning behind his lightning bolt goal celebration.
The 27-year-old makes a lightning bolt gesture after almost
every goal and his scintillating form since Leeds returned to the Premier
League has enabled him to make the symbol with his hands frequently.
His form has led to his first ever call-up to the England
senior team and he will be hoping to use the celebration in an England shirt
before returning to West Yorkshire.
Speaking on the England national team's official YouTube
channel, he said: "The Z celebration is actually a lightning bolt.
"It's supposed to be bolt for planet, so it's kind of
raising awareness for climate change and obviously there's a lot to be done so
it's trying to help everyone learn about that.
"I got involved with that, started learning more about
it and then realised that I never really had an iconic celebration or a same
one I did.
"So, when we came up with the symbol, I thought there's
not only going to be an alright celebration and trademark, but also people will
start asking and then people will start learning more when they realise what
it's about.
"So, hopefully the more goals I score, the more
awareness it raises."
The forward regularly raises awareness of climate change
issues on social media and is an ambassador for Hylo Athletics, a sustainable
sport shoe company.
Bamford could make his senior England debut tonight when
Gareth Southgate's side face Hungary in a World Cup qualifier, which will be
followed by clashes with Andorra and Poland.
He has joined Leeds teammate Kalvin Phillips in the squad,
who has established himself as a key figure for the Three Lions and recently
scooped the 2020/21 BT England Men's Player of the Year award.
Bamford faces stern competition up front but will be hoping
to replicate his club form on the international stage to ensure he is in
contention for a place in Southgate's 2022 World Cup squad.
