Warnock - We were well beaten
Leeds United boss Neil Warnock admitted that the side were well beaten at Barnsley.
Leeds lost to two second half goals at Barnsley, but the game could have been quite easily all over as a contest in the first half as a string of good saves by Paddy Kenny and the woodwork denied the home side.
Barnsley started the day bottom of the league, without a manager, without a home league win since the beginning of September and having not kept a clean sheet in their previous fifteen games.
Barnsley were in control of the game from the first minute, with Leeds poor away form continuing to ruin any chance of a play-off push in the second half of the season.
Warnock admitted his side were never at the races in a one sided game that saw Leeds fail to have a shot on target or even a corner in 90 minutes.
Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Warnock said, "We were never at the races and they were up for it with it being a derby game.
"We were non-existent in midfield in the first half. I thought we started the second half ok. We made a couple of changes and we had a few chances, something we didn`t have in the first half.
"They should have been out of sight in the first half. They were more up for it and we were being caught and were sloppy in midfield. We owed a lot to the defence who kept us in it.
"We were well beaten in the end."
Leeds have now picked up just six points from their last ten games on the road and they have won just one of these.
The defeat at Barnsley sees Leeds slip to eleventh in the championship and they are now five points off the play-off places.
Warnock insists that Lee Peltier is the best left back at the club despite another shocking performance.
The club captain was once again all at sea on the left hand side of the Leeds defence as they went down to a 2-0 defeat at Barnsley on Saturday.
His performance was summed up in the first half when he had a complete air kick at an attempted clearance.
Leeds have Adam Drury and Aidan White, who can also play at left back, but Peltier has been preferred in this position for most of the season, despite being more recognised at right back.
The Leeds fans have continued to vent their frustration at Warnock`s insistence on playing Peltier at left back and Yorkshire Radio reporter Jonny Buchan questioned him after the game, when he asked why he continued to persist with Peltier when there were other options. "Drury was in bed with flu today and I don`t think Aidy White is better than Lee Peltier. I am happy to have Peltier in the side,"the Leeds boss told Buchan.
Peltier arrived from Leicester City in the summer and he has been an almost ever-present, making 28 appearances and playing across the back four, although mostly at left back.
Drury also arrived in the summer from Norwich City. A vastly experienced full-back with over 500 career appearances to his name and he has struggled to gain a regular run in the Leeds side since his arrival.
He has made just 11 appearances for Leeds since his arrival and he has looked a solid and combative in a natural position.
Warnock says that leading goalscorer Luciano Becchio did not have his mind on the game at Barnsley on Saturday.
The 19 goal leading goalscorer this season has been the talk of much transfer speculation since the January transfer window opened and Warnock says, the window is always a nightmare for managers.
Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Warnock said, 'His head wasn't right and that's why the transfer window is such a nightmare for managers. I'll be having a word with him.'
Becchio is going into the final eighteen months of his current deal at Elland Road having joined the club in the summer of 2008.
The 29 year old has netted 86 goals since his arrival and he is set to beat his best return of 20 goals in a season.
Premier League sides Wigan Athletic and Norwich City have both been linked with a move for the striker as well as championship side Bolton Wanderers in this transfer window.
