Leeds United new boy's intelligence, Red Bull reunion, first half horror show and off-camera Norwich moments — YEP 2/10/24
By Graham Smyth
The YEP’s take and off-camera moments from Tuesday night’s
1-1 draw for Leeds United at Norwich City.
Leeds United left Tuesday night’s clash at Championship
hosts Norwich City with a point and some impressive performances - but also a
very worrying new injury. Here’s the YEP’s take and some off-camera moments
from the 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.
Good day
Willy Gnonto
He was everywhere. It was no coincidence that Leeds looked
so much less dangerous after he went off. Norwich simply could not contain him
and his performance deserved a goal, but he had to settle for an assist.
Ao Tanaka
There will be questions about how open Leeds were, but with
two 8s instead of two 6s in midfield that was maybe always going to happen. In
possession however Tanaka was cool, calm and collected. Took the ball under
pressure and used it well. Showed his intelligence
Bad day
Leeds United
Already missing Ethan Ampadu, the last thing anyone wanted
to see was another injury but Daniel Farke's only remaining defensive
midfielder Ilia Gruev limping off was a horror-show. The Whites cannot afford
any more injuries at centre-back or in the middle of the park.
Off-camera
Mateo Joseph coming out for the warm-up in a short sleeved
shirt - the only Leeds man to do so - but spoiling it slightly by wearing
tights.
Referee Stephen Martin going out of his way to greet Leeds
goalkeeping coach Ed Wootten as the officials trotted around the pitch during
their warm-up.
Karl Darlow having a chat with his ex-Newcastle team-mate
Grant Hanley, with whom he won the Championship, while retrieving Illan Meslier
goal-kicks during the warm-up. Leeds' substitute stopper then collided with a
Norwich staff member.
Sam Byram suffering several ear flicks after erring during
the substitutes' warm-up game.
Leeds’ mascot getting a photo with Bamford and Byram and
Alex Cairns signing his shirt.
Leeds United coach Christopher John sharing a fond embrace
with Hanley as he walked across the Carrow Road pitch to take his place in the
stand opposite.
One of the many Norwich City mascots losing his boot as they
ran off after the pre-kick-off photo. Luckily for the youngster the away end
failed to notice.
Farke bending fourth official Matt Donohue's ear in first
half stoppage time as a decision went the way of the hosts.
James Debayo pulling off an incredible turn and flick to
nutmeg Darlow and leave him open mouthed as the subs engaged in a half-time
rondo.
Chris Domogalla running down the stand to tell Joe Gelhardt
to stay off the pitch after the referee stopped the game to admonish the Leeds
subs for encroaching as they warmed up.
Aaronson and Amankwah Forson having a Red Bull Salzburg
reunion before the Leeds man went to embrace his USMNT colleague Josh Sargent.
Farke walking around Carrow Road applauding his former fans
after appreciating the support of the Leeds section.
