Farke's home faithful abuse, Byram punishment, insider knowledge and Leeds United moments missed — Leeds Live 2/10/24
The home fans got stuck into Farke
Leeds United drew 1-1 with Norwich City in their
Championship clash and here are some of the moments you may have missed at
Carrow Road, starting with Sam Byram's punishment. Leeds United’s substitutes
were going through their usual array of light-hearted routines before the match
got going.
During their warm-up, they frequently line up in a circle
and try to retain possession around the perimeter with one touch, denying the
opponent in the centre. Byram was eventually dealt a hospital pass with a ball
high in the air to control, but he couldn’t do it, shanked the ball away and
had to face his punishment.
Despite his protests, Patrick Bamford led the flicks of the
ear the full-back received.
Insider knowledge from the bench
After Stephen Martin had awarded the penalty against Leeds,
Ilia Gruev was down and receiving treatment in the box. While that was going
on, it gave the bench enough time to call Mateo Joseph over.
The striker seemed to be given a message to then run over
and share with Illan Meslier, who was preparing to face the spot-kick. Kenny
McLean had hold of the ball initially, but Josh Sargent would eventually take
it.
Each of those players is well-known to Daniel Farke and the
backroom staff he took from Carrow Road with him to Elland Road. It’s not hard
to wonder if they remembered a penalty habit Sargent had during their time
together in 2021.
Subs halt the game with a warning
Substitutes will generally warm-up down the left-hand
touchline as they look out at the pitch from the dugouts. At Carrow Road,
unfortunately, there is not a lot of space between the advertising hoardings
and the touchline, so it gets congested.
Players, where possible, will carry out some of their drills
on the pitch for a little more room, but the referee took exception to this at
one point. He halted the match in the 73rd minute to tell Byram et al to stay
off the pitch. Farke passed on the message too.
Farke’s pantomime role
When you consider the love and esteem Marcelo Bielsa holds
at Elland Road after four transformative years, including a Championship title,
you can imagine the affection for Farke at Carrow Road. Two Championship crowns
make for a hugely impressive CV for the German in Norfolk.
However, before the post-match applause Farke and the
supporters shared with each other, there was some abuse from the home faithful.
The manager had been cautioned for complaining about a free-kick given against
his team and the home support took their chance to chant: “Sit down, shut up.”
