A Leeds United supporter is claimed to have been slashed in
the neck with a blade following their Championship play-off semi-final first
leg with Norwich City on Sunday afternoon. The man was reportedly attacked
outside Carrow Road after the match as he attempted to ask a group of Norwich
fans about their alleged tragedy chanting.
Supporters clashed outside of the stadium following the 0-0
draw which kicked off at midday, with police being forced to intervene.
In a post shared on X, Leeds fan @DorsettHottub posted that
his dad had been attacked after the full-time whistle sounded. He wrote: “We
came out of Carrow Road after the game to Chants of Turks with knives and
Galatasaray.. whilst asking the lads why it was said, my dad was slashed in the
neck with a blade and hit by a full can. If anyone knows anything please speak
up.”
Express Sport understands that two arrests were made
following the incident. Norwich City have confirmed that they are now working
with Norfolk Police to understand what happened and are investigating the
matter.
Express Sport have also contacted Norfolk Constabulary for
comment.
Two Leeds supporters were murdered in Turkey in 2002 when
the Elland Road outfit took on Galatasaray, and the incident has fuelled
several grim incidents of tragedy chanting.
The terrible evening in Istanbul has haunted Leeds for
decades, with Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight both tragically losing their
lives after being stabbed by a local during clashes the night before their side
played in the semi-finals of the 2000 UEFA Cup.
Norwich will now travel to Leeds with it all to play for at
Elland Road next week, with Southampton’s clash with West Brom on Sunday also
finishing goalless in what was an underwhelming afternoon of football for
neutrals.
Daniel Farke will be hoping that his side can capitalise on
their home advantage to book their spot in the final at Wembley and take one
step closer to bouncing straight back to the Premier League.
They were relegated last season under Sam Allardyce, after
both Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia had been sacked earlier in the season.
Failing to gain promotion back to the top flight could see
several key players leave, with Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville both
attracting interest from top teams around Europe.
