'Got that wrong' - Russell Martin's true feelings on Daniel Farke after hurtful demise — Leeds Live 22/5/24
Leeds United meet Southampton in the Championship play-off final at Wembley and it brings Russell Martin together with Daniel Farke once more this season
History shows the end of Russell Martin’s distinguished
service to Norwich City coincided with the arrival of Daniel Farke at Carrow
Road. Martin was only 31 when the German arrived in Norfolk, but it became
clear to him he was deemed surplus to requirements.
Despite signing a new contract with Norwich more than a
month after Farke’s arrival, Martin was out on loan by the following January to
Glasgow Rangers. By the end of August 2018, his contract was being terminated
by mutual agreement and his playing career did not last much longer after that.
With Martin and Farke set to cross swords for the third time
this season on Sunday, but in the white heat of a Wembley play-off final, an
old clip has surfaced on social media. Talk Norwich City has recirculated an
appearance Martin made on their Canaries podcast.
Addressing Martin, the hosts says the last time he was on
their podcast he was excited about Farke’s imminent arrival at Norwich.
Martin, smiling, said: “Got that wrong, didn’t I?”
He added: “Going back to then: I’d just signed a new
contract. The plan was in place with Stuart [Webber] and the club to start
looking towards the end of my playing career and finish at Norwich with the
hope of starting to work there as well, in whatever role.
“That was the plan, but things don’t always go to plan.
Daniel had other plans and it became fairly obvious fairly quickly [I wasn’t
going to feature].
“Unfortunately, I left. I went on loan to Rangers, enjoyed
the first couple of months, after that, didn’t really at all, couldn’t wait to
get home.
“Summer came and it was obvious I wasn’t going to be part of
the plans again. So, you have to make a decision. It’s not nice just getting
paid and not playing.
“After you’ve been a big part of something, it’s difficult
to then become, not even a bit-part, I was totally out of it. I was training
with the 23s and I was trying to add value to them boys and help them, but it
just became difficult.
“I love the football club, I love the city, I love the
place, but sometimes you know when it’s the right time and it was the right
time to leave.”
