Warnock on Clayton goal celebration
Leeds United boss Neil Warnock says he would have probably done the same following the reaction of former player Adam Clayton after he had equalised for Huddersfield Town.
Clayton was transfer listed by Warnock at the end of last season and he joined Huddersfield Town in the summer.
The midfielder scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-2 just before half time and he celebrated by sliding on his knees in front of Warnock in the Leeds technical area. Speaking on Yorkshire Radio after the game, Warnock said, "I don`t mind celebrations like that. If I had been a player, I would probably have done the same."
Warnock had the last laugh though as Leeds went on to win the game 4-2 and leapfrog their West Yorkshire neighbours in the table "I saved my celebrations for the end of the game under my breath," finished Warnock.
The win was Leeds biggest of the season and the first time they have won three in a row in the championship since December 2010.
Warnock says the team showed great character to come from behind to beat local neighbours Huddersfield Town 4-2 at the John Smith`s Stadium.
Leeds went behind inside fifteen minutes when Chris Atkinson found space in behind the Leeds defence to pick his spot.
The whites slowly grew into the game and got back on level terms when a weak shot by Michael Tonge was somehow allowed to go under his body by Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies.
Luciano Becchio fired Leeds ahead shortly afterwards and despite former Leeds midfielder Adam Clayton equalising from the penalty spot shortly before half time, there was only ever one side going to win the game in the second half, with Leeds dominating.
Speaking on the Football League show, Warnock said, "I now there was only three points at stake but in a local derby there was lots of twists and turns.
"To go behind like we did, I thought we should a lot of character and played some good football. We didn`t panic and we got back into the game a bit fortunately but after that I thought we dominated the second half."
Leeds eventually took the lead on 70 minutes when a good move eventually found David Norris inside the area and he shot across Smithies into the corner of the net.
The game was over with four minutes remaining when Ryan Hall, who made a huge difference when he came on just past the hour, crossed for Becchio to head home his fourteenth goal of the season.
The win for Leeds, their biggest of the season, was the first time they have won by more than one goal this season and it was also the first time Leeds have won three championship games in a row after failing to win any of their previous seven.
The win lifts Leeds into tenth place in the championship and they are now just four points off a play-off place with the trip to Derby County next up on Saturday. Warnock says it has been his best week at the club since taking over the reins in February.
Warnock watched his Leeds side put one over former boss Simon Grayson as Leeds won the local bragging rights over West Yorkshire neighbours Huddersfield 4-2.
Leeds went into last weekend on the back of seven games without a win and they faced a tricky week, with games against leaders Crystal Palace and third placed Leicester City at Elland Road before finishing off the week with the local derby.
Even the most optimistic of people involved with Leeds would have never have thought they would have come out of the three games with maximum points and Warnock admits it is the best week he has had since arriving at the club. Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Warnock said, "It has been a great week, probably the best since I have been here. It was not just winning the games but the way we have played, we have played really well in the last week."
Over 20,000 were present at the game, Huddersfield`s biggest home crowd since Leeds last visited in February 2010.
Warnock managed Huddersfield for two seasons in the 1990`s and he added that it was great to win the local derby. "It was a great atmosphere. The rivalry is there and it is always good to win derbies and pick up three points."
The three wins in a row is the first time that Leeds have achieved the feat since winning three in a row in December 2010, in their first season back in the championship.
Leeds travel to Derby County next weekend looking to make it four in a row, something they haven`t achieved since November 2009.
