Leeds United Football Club - Talks Continue
Talks Continue
Leeds United director Melvyn Helme is hopeful that a deal with a potential new investor in the club can be reached in the near future.
Helme was responding to press reports which revealed an American consortium has been in discussions with the club about a possible takeover, but he would not confirm or deny the identity of any potential suitors.
He said: "We have had a policy ever since we took over at Leeds that in view of all the various speculation there has been, we have never commented on individual situations.
"We have just done a deal for the casino land at Elland Road and we were talking to four or five casino operators. We have successfully concluded a deal which is to the benefit of Leeds United and we did not comment on any part of it before an announcement was made.
"At this point in time we are trying to stabilise the club's finances still and we are also trying to find money for Kevin Blackwell to strengthen the squad, and we are talking to a number of parties. It would be quite wrong for us to comment on individual parties at this stage because at the end of day I am not sure which party will come forward and do a deal with us.
"We are at an advanced stage of negotiations with various people and when those negotiations carry on we have to have a look at all the options on the table and choose the best one for Leeds United."
Helme was optimistic that a cash injection will be forthcoming to take the club forward soon, and the rebuilding process at Leeds United can gather pace.
"I have a dream for Elland Road that sees the stadium substantially redeveloped over the next four to five years," said Helme.
"The casino is the first part of what is hopefully a large jigsaw and I can see a situation where money will come into the club.
"Leeds United is a very large club and if you speak to people around the world and ask them for the names of three or four English clubs Leeds United is always one of them.
"It is nonsensical to think that at some stage money will not come into Leeds. I have been waiting for the last seven to eight months for it to come in, I am still waiting and hoping that in the next few weeks something will happen."
