Leeds United 3 Norwich City 0: Club's 23-year first as star dazzles for FA Cup progression amid VAR dismay — YEP 8/3/26

Leeds United took on Norwich City at Elland Road for a place
in the FA Cup’s quarter finals.
Leeds United booked a place in the FA Cup’s quarter-finals
for the first time in 23 years as left back Gabi Gudmundsson particularly
dazzled in a 3-0 win against Sunday’s fifth round visitors Norwich City.
Leeds looked to have gone ahead in the 20th minute as Lukas
Nmecha rolled the ball home from a Willy Gnonto knockdown to a long ball from
Jaka Bijol but VAR intervened to judge that Gnonto had handled the ball in
challenging keeper Daniel Grimshaw.
The goal was disallowed but a dominant Whites ahead just
after the half hour mark through a brilliant turn and finish from Sean
Longstaff after Gabi Gudmundsson's excellent cutback from the byline.
It was one-way traffic and Daniel Farke's Whites doubled
their lead in the 42nd minute as a Dan James cross was only cleared to the
excellent Gudmundsson who slammed home a clinical and no nonsense finish from
the middle of the box.
A Leeds change was made during the interval as James Justin
was brought on to replace Sebastiaan Bornauw and Norwich attempted to respond,
Liam Gibbs wasting a good chance by blazing a shot over the bar after a neat
move into the box.
Another good Norwich chance was then wasted on the hour mark
as Jose Cordoba beat Ethan Ampadu to a free-kick swung in from the left only to
send his header over the bar.
The Canaries then missed their best opportunity yet a few
minutes later, a cross from the left going between Lucas Perri and the near
post all the way through to substitute Anis Ben Slimane whose shot from a tight
angle hit the outside of the post.
But only a brilliant save from substitute Norwich keeper
Vladan Kovacevic denied Leeds a third goal as the tide changed again, Joel
Piroe letting fly with a brilliant effort from distance that Kovacevic tipped
on to the bar and over.
Kovacevic then made two more excellent saves to thwart Piroe
but the striker wasn’t going to be denied and bagged United’s third goal in the
85th minute with a beautiful first-time curled finish to a Nmecha square ball
after a brilliant run and pass from Anton Stach.
