Raphinha contract talks with Leeds United not in trouble 'despite reports to the contrary' - MOT Leeds News 17/2/22
Negotiations on a new Leeds United contract for Raphinha are reportedly not in jeopardy and remain in a “positive place” says the Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.
A report from Goal earlier on 16 February claimed that the
Brazilian had snubbed the two contract approaches in order to hear offers from
“Europe’s top teams” but it appears that may not be accurate.
Despite a downturn in form, the winger has been the Whites’
standout performer during a difficult season this year.
Smyth writes in the Yorkshire Evening Post: “The YEP
understands that despite reports to the contrary, Victor Orta’s dialogue with
the Brazilian winger’s representative Deco remains ongoing and the Whites
believe that while an agreement isn’t imminent, the negotiations are in a
positive place.
“Raphinha’s current deal runs until 2024 so Leeds are well
protected and if push came to shove this summer they could command an
eye-watering sum for the 25-year-old, but a new contract would give the player
a salary that would better reflect his importance to the side.”
The report earlier today was yet another major blow to Leeds
fans in what has been a painful season all together.
Following the reported £50million bid from West Ham in the
January window, speculation has increased about the 25-year-old potentially
leaving in the summer.
And while that is by no means off the table, the new report
should reassure fans somewhat of that club at least being able to secure an
adequate fee.
It would not be a surprise if the ongoing-contract
negotiations are being conducted in the knowledge that a summer move is likely.
But the short-term benefit of increased wages for the player
and the security for the club to be able to charge a price that he is worth can
still make it beneficial for both sides.
The Elland Road hierarchy may be hoping that such a contract
prices some suitors out of a move and allows them to build with their prize
asset next season.
That has no chance of happening if the team is relegated
though so the priority in fan’s minds should be for the club to see of that
possibility.
