Leeds United match-winner Lucas Perri addresses confidence after FA Cup heroics at Birmingham — YEP 15/2/26

Lucas Perri played his part in Leeds United’s thrilling FA Cup fourth-round win at Birmingham City.

Leeds United’s match-winning goalkeeper Lucas Perri hopes to build on an impressive performance in Saturday’s FA Cup penalty-shootout victory over Birmingham City.

Perri’s start to life at Leeds following his £16million move from Lyon has been mixed, with the Brazilian producing good saves but also falling guilty of some costly errors. Manager Daniel Farke publicly criticised the goalkeeper last month before replacing him as first-choice with Karl Darlow.

An FA Cup trip to Birmingham offered Perri the chance to get back in the groove and with Leeds a long way from their best, he was regularly tested. A first-half save from Jay Stansfield was outstanding and there was little he could do when Patrick Roberts’ deflected strike cancelled out Lukas Nmecha’s opener.

After a chaotic extra-time period, the game went to penalties and Perri contributed again, brilliantly saving Tommy Doyle’s spot-kick before Roberts skied his effort. Sean Longstaff then stepped up to make it four-from-four for Leeds, with a large chunk of the squad running to their goalkeeper.

“It’s always good to have a good game like this,” Perri told TNT Sports after the win. “The most important thing is to have confidence in myself. It doesn’t depend on the result but obviously it’s nice to have a game like this. I hope to keep going and helping the club as always.”

Unlike their previous penalty shootout at Sheffield Wednesday back in August, Leeds were clinical from 12 yards with Joel Piroe, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Brenden Aaronson scoring before Longstaff. Birmingham’s efforts were good too, including Doyle who was unfortunate to see Perri pull off a great save.

Before the penalties got underway, Perri and goalkeeping coach Ed Wootten were spotted working their way through a list of the Birmingham players’ preferences on a water bottle. But the match-winning goalkeeper admitted he was a little confused with the home side’s retro kit design.

“We had a video but unfortunately for the first two penalties, since they didn’t have the numbers on their shorts it was difficult for me to see,” he added with a smile. “The third one, we didn’t know exactly where he would shoot so I went with instinct. I’m happy to help the club.”
