LEEDS United’s media arm is bidding for the right to run a local television channel. Leeds TV is one of five parties competing for a licence that will let the holder broadcast programmes in the Leeds area.
The channel’s output will be available digitally, although there will be an option to also offer services on satellite and cable.
A decision on who has won the licence for Leeds is expected next month from media regulator Ofcom.
Leeds TV is made up of a group of companies that includes United’s existing LUTV online television channel and the club website as well as Elland Road-based Yorkshire Radio.
Their application to Ofcom says: “We are enormously passionate about creating a local TV channel that instils a strong sense of civic pride and inclusion.”
The application adds that “the long-term existence and success of Leeds TV is not dependent upon the ownership of [the football club]”.
It also says sport-themed shows would only form part of the channel’s output.
Leeds TV’s rival bidders are called Made In Leeds, Metro8 Leeds, NORTH and YourTV Leeds.
Ofcom is awarding licences in a total of 21 areas nationwide, including Sheffield and Newcastle.
