Leeds United Football Club - Statement From Trevor Birch
Now the transfer window has closed, it is probably appropriate to reflect on the last few weeks.
I stated when I arrived over three months ago that I believed our best chance of survival was to keep our key players and create a cohesive team spirit to see us through to the end of the season. That has not been easy and we have been under enormous pressure having received expressions of interest in our top players.
This has had two effects on the club. One, it has interfered with the creditor negotiations and secondly has had an unsettling effect on the players themselves.
Clearly it was right for us to explore these offers considering our perilous financial position. However, we stand by our belief that it is in the best interest of the club and all parties that we maintain our strength and fight for Premiership survival rather than endure the short term benefit of cash generated from player sales.
The players have played their part by agreeing to a wage deferral and we have squeezed all other areas where funds might be available.
By the end of this week we hope to be able to announce that we have the creditors agreement to a standstill which will see us through to the end of the season.
We now have 15 games in which to battle for our survival. We have today received some great news regarding Eddie Gray and I am sure everyone will get behind Eddie and the players willing the team home between now and the end of the season.
