Time for Mac to bring some new players in - Ormsby

Former Leeds United captain Brendan Ormsby claimed the responsibility for the club’s loss of form lay with their senior players as he urged Brian McDermott to attack the loan market during the international break.
Ormsby, who watched Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Derby County as a radio pundit, said United’s experienced professionals should “look at themselves and start pointing fingers” following a bad run of Championship form and a fifth league defeat of the season.
But the 52-year-old, who skippered Leeds during the 1980s, claimed that new signings were also essential with McDermott fighting for consistency within his squad.
Leeds do not have another league game until the visit of Birmingham City to Elland Road on October 20 and McDermott will use the next two weeks to look for a striker and a winger after the club’s board put up funds to bring players in on emergency loans.
Ormsby said: “Brian needs one or two new players to liven things up. He can only work with the money he’s getting from the board but if he’s got enough to do something then now’s the time.
“Looking at what he’s got at the moment, they’re an average Championship side. You’ve got certain players with ability – Ross McCormack’s one of them and the player with the most, El-Hadji Diouf, is sitting on the bench – but there’s not enough to make the play-offs a realistic target. They look a long way off at the moment.
“But I think the players have let Brian down, not just (at Derby) but in a few of the other games too. There needs to be a will to win from the first whistle and I didn’t see that on Saturday.
“A few of the senior pros have got to start taking responsibility. They’ve got to look at themselves and start pointing fingers.”
McDermott insisted before the game at Derby that he was not ignoring the loan market, saying: “If there’s someone out there who can make a difference then I’ll do it.”
The United boss cut an angry figure after goals from Chris Martin, Johnny Russell and Will Hughes put his side to the sword at Pride Park and he said: “Over the next two weeks we’ll train, try to find some players and work with the team we’ve got.”
Ormsby said: “Brian’s the manager, he decides who he signs and he decides on his starting XI. But I always say that once the players cross that white line, there’s only so much he can do about it.
“The players who are in his team have got the shirt and they need to go out and earn it. If they’re not doing the job then it’s up to Brian to change things. And I think he will change things after Saturday.
“The buck stops with him because he’s the manager but if I’m in the team then it’s up to me to prove that I’m worth the shirt. Not many players did that.”
