United manager Brian McDermott reflects on the weekend reverse at Derby County... Frustrated manager Brian McDermott is vowing to “do whatever it takes” in his bid to see an upturn in the recent fortunes of his United side.
Saturday’s defeat at Derby County was the fifth reverse in six games, as United paid the price for a shocking start that saw the Rams score twice inside the opening 20 minutes to take control of the game.
A Jason Pearce goal gave a glimmer of hope, but Derby added a third in the second half to ensure their new man at the helm – Steve McClaren – was able to toast a winning start to his tenure.
“We’d won one game in 21 away from home before we came,” reflected a frustrated Leeds boss. “Since then we’ve won at Watford, Ipswich, and Bolton…On Saturday we played our best football on the halfway line which is pretty irrelevant really.
“You can’t give away one goal and two goals like we did. We need to become more solid and difficult to beat. These players have done it. They can do it. We’ve had the conversation after the game in the dressing room.
“We’re not distancing ourselves from the players, we have to put it right against Birmingham. We had a long conversation afterwards. The outcome will only be what we see on the pitch. It’s easy to talk, but we’ll see against Birmingham.
“There’s frustration for all of us. We’ve got to get it right and that makes me more determined. Every team is in a process of finding its way to a winning formula, but at the moment we don’t have any consistency. We won last Tuesday, and I don’t think Saturday was about confidence, it was about mentality.”
Having won twice since the last international break, United now face a two-week lay-off before returning to Sky Bet Championship action against Birmingham City on Sunday October 20.
“We’ll try and find some players - and work with what we have,” said the boss of the latest break. “I’m looking at what we need to do to make ourselves better.
“I’m as frustrated as anybody. It’s 19 games since we came here – that is a short period of time - and nobody wants to do this more than me.”
