Five-goal win at Throstle Nest... FARSLEY 0, UNITED 5 (Poleon 4,Smith 22, 27, Hunt 50, White 62)
United (first half): Kenny, Peltier, Killock, Pearce, Pugh, Brown, Green, Tonge, McCormack, Smith, Poleon.
United (second half): Cairns, L Turner, Lees, Warnock, Drury, Norris, Thompson, Lenighan (Murphy 75), White, Varney, Hunt.
United manager Brian McDermott named two different sides for each half for the opening pre-season game at Farsley. New signings Noel Hunt and Matt Smith were both included while Luke Murphy was among the substitutes. Sam Byram, El-Hadji Diouf and Jamie Ashdown all missed out through injury.
The game started in sweltering conditions, and it took just 4 minutes for Dominic Poleon to score the first goal of the summer when he converted after being played in by Michael Tonge.
Unsurprisingly, it was United who controlled proceedings and debut man Smith was denied by Farsley goalkeeper Tom Morgan after being played in by Ross McCormack. The home goalkeeper also made saves to deny Paul Green and Smith.
But United's big striker scored twice in the space of just five minutes before the half-hour. The first came after good work by Poleon and the second came after a precision corner from Michael Tonge.
On a hat-trick, Smith was denied twice more by Morgan, while Michael Brown also rattled the woodwork from 25 yards out with a stinging strike.
It was a day for new boys scoring, though, and Noel Hunt maintained the theme when he got up well to head home a Luke Varney cross just five minutes into the second half.
Shortly after the hour it was the turn of Aidy White to get on the scoresheet when he made it 5-0 with a terrific solo effort. Moments later, it could have been six, but Varney was cursing the upright, and for all the effort in the roasting conditions, there were no further goals to add.
The vast support were afforded a 15-minute glimpse of Luke Murphy during the closing stages, and both the manager and the fans will have been happy with what they saw throughout the afternoon.

United boss Brian McDermott was delighted with the opening pre-season friendly at Farsley after watching his side put five without reply past the Northern Premier League Division One side. On a sweltering afternoon at Throstle Nest, United fans turned out in numbers as Matt Smith scored twice, to add to goals from Noel Hunt, Dominic Poleon, and Aidy White in a 5-0 victory.
"It was a worthwhile exercise for us and for Farsley, so we're all pleased," said the United boss.
"I spoke to the players before and said to them that every time they play for Leeds United they put their reputations on the line, and that's how it is for the season really.
"Wherever you play, you play in front of a big support, the support was fantastic today, and they deserve to see the lads giving them everything which they did. I think the three new lads realised what this place is about and we need to get some momentum going."
The boss was pleased to see former Oldham striker Smith mark his debut with a couple of first half goals.
"Look at Matt Smith and look what he's got," said the boss. "He has height, he can bring people in and score goals. What we've got to do is get better every day and keep working hard."
While Smith and Hunt were on the scoresheet, fellow new recruit Luke Murphy was restricted to just 15 minutes in the second half.
"He's fine, but he needs a bit more time," added the boss. "We'll ease him back in. He'll play 45 in Slovenia and we'll work him back in and so he's right for Brighton."
