Leeds United legendary figure brings Elland Road to its feet in special half-time centre circle presentation — YEP 3/12/25

Howard Wilkinson was honoured during the half-time break of Leeds United vs Chelsea.

Leeds United legend Howard Wilkinson has been welcomed back to Elland Road at half-time during the game against Chelsea for a special presentation.

The man who led the Whites back into the top flight and then won the First Division, all the while drawing up the blueprints for the club's academy and future legacy, was given a standing ovation as he walked onto the pitch during the break to be inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame.

The presentation took place in the centre circle as a tribute was paid to Wilkinson's impact on the club. The 82-year-old brought a laugh from the crowd, saying it felt 'embarrassing' to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

He went on: "Leeds were so good to me, the fans were so good to me, supported me all the time I was here. I was here for all those years and never worked a day in my life.

“I can't get over the fact that, football has been my life, my hobby, has given me a living and I've enjoyed every minute. I can't look back on it without thinking how lucky I've been to have enjoyed that sort of life. My father left school on his 14th birthday and was down the pit the next day."

While the first team is preparing for the next friendly against Villarreal, the U21s side, with a host of first team stars, thrashed Norweigian side Lyn 1896 10-2 in a pre-season friendly this afternoon. There were some surprising names on the scoresheet – Patrick Bamford scored, Sam Greenwood netted a brace and Joe Gelhardt scored four goals in the game. Leeds United are edging closer to a Premier League return with just one more friendly left to play now that a 1-1 draw with Villarreal is in the books. It was far from a thriller at Elland Road but there were positives to take, particularly for two individuals involved in the Whites goal. It was far from a good day for others, however.
