Reports in Italy suggest Massimo Cellino could sign experienced defender Nicolas Spolli, a player who infamously turned Tottenham Hotspur down last summer.
According to Tutto Mercato, Massimo Cellino is looking to sign 31-year-old Catania centre-back Nicolas Spolli, who according to reports is thought to be flattered by the link to Leeds United.
Last season, the Catania defender defiantly turned down Tottenham Hotspur, insisting he had no plans on moving from the Italian club.
'I had told the president that I wanted to remain in Catania as soon as last season came to a close,' said Spolli in September 2013. 'before there was any talk of transfers,'
'When the interest from Tottenham came in, the club didn't even need to ask me, because they knew what my intentions were.
'I am happy in Catania, it's a wonderful city and when I have the time it's incredible to enjoy both the sea and Etna.'
Nevertheless, the recent links to Leeds, according to the report, seem like the Yorkshire club could land the giant centre-back despite Spurs missing out. Catania were relegated from Serie A last season, which is likely to have played a huge part in his, reported, interest in moving to England.
Regardless of the Argentinian's reasoning, the signing of Spolli would undoubtedly go a long way for Cellino into building relationships and trust with the Leeds United supporters.
As he is, quite simply, a signing that would be unthinkable to most Championship clubs.
