Brian McDermott said Leeds United were “knocking on the door” in the Championship after prising a fifth successive home win from last night’s clash with Wigan Athletic.
A continuation of Ross McCormack’s scintillating goalscoring form carried United to a 2-0 victory at Elland Road and kept the club in the thick of the fight for a play-off position.
McCormack banked his 14th and 15th goals of the season with efforts in either half – the second a strike which team-mate Jason Pearce attempted to claim – and Wigan had no answer to the Scotland international’s finishing.
The FA Cup holders came to Leeds without a manager after the sacking of Owen Coyle on Monday and they struggled to string a compelling performance together as United recovered from Saturday’s loss at Blackburn Rovers to move up to seventh in the table.
McDermott, who has previously stressed the importance of being in touch with the top six at Christmas, said: “There’s a lot of games between now and Christmas, a lot of games in December, and we’ll chalk them off one by one. But you want to be there or thereabouts, knocking on the door, and I suppose we are.
“We deserved to win because we were clinical and we worked hard. We managed the game well.
“Ross was terrific and led the line really, really well. We got two good finishes from him. We’ve got a winning mentality here now and it’s important to have that. We’re learning how to win games.”
