Gary Neville gets caught out with Leeds United comment in Sky Sports on-air blunder — Leeds Live 18/8/25
Leeds United took on Everton in their Premier League opener but former Man United defender Gary Neville risked upsetting supporters with his tongue-in-cheek gaffe
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville doubled down
on his opinion of Leeds United supporters after his Sky Sports gaffe. The
television giants' cameras were at Elland Road on Monday night for the Whites'
return to the Premier League as they took on Everton.
Both Neville and Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher were tasked
with analysing the weekend's action as well as previewing Daniel Farke's side
in their top-flight opener. However, the pundit was left with egg on his face
after misjudging the length of an advertisement break during their broadcast,
with the show resuming early.
Footage shows a close-up of the section of Leeds supporters
ahead of their curtain raiser but unbeknownst to Neville, the cameras were
rolling and he can be heard saying: "That’s one group of fans I wouldn’t
want to go near."
Presenter Dave Jones looked to prompt his colleague that
they were live but it didn't stop the panel sharing a laugh over the
misdemeanour.
He intervened: "I do have to apologise."
Neville wasn't afraid to risk the wrath of Leeds fans
further when he doubled down on his take, he added: "One group of fans I
wouldn't go anywhere near."
Before Jones added: "I don't think they want you
anywhere near, it's fine.
"They have been looking forward to this."
Leeds got off to a strong start against David Moyes' side
with the Toffees limited to next to no opportunities in the opening 45.
The Whites dominated the corner statistics and put Jordan
Pickford's goal under pressure but rarely tested the English shot-stopper.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Leeds chief Paraag Marathe
said: “I want to tell you all I’m very excited to run it back with Daniel.
“I’m really excited about collaborating with Daniel, with
Robbie Evans, with Adam Underwood and, together, we are going to build the best
squad we can with every penny we’re allowed to spend to compete in the Premier
League.
“I’m under no illusions it’s going to be easy. I know all
the stats. Last season’s three promoted clubs went right back down. Two years
ago, three promoted clubs went right back down, but we have something they
don’t.”
