DEFENDER DARIO Del Fabro received his marching orders as Leeds United played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at Nottingham Forest in their top-of-the-table Professional Development League 2 Under-21s League clash.
The Italy under-19 international, who became United’s 14th signing of a hectic summer transfer window when he joined on a season-long loan from Cagliari with a view to a permanent move at the end of August, was dismissed just before the interval for kicking out at Forest player Roger Riera in an off-the-ball incident.
Earlier, United were afforded a flying start with Kalvin Phillips netting a fine double for the visitors, only for the Reds to hit back to claim a share of the spoils, thanks to a last-gasp goal from first-team squad player Lars Veldwijk at Wilford Lane.
Aside from the dismissal of Del Fabro, the first-half was also noteworthy for two exquisite goals from midfielder Phillips, 18, currently enjoying an impressive campaign.
Phillips, who captained United’s under-18s last term and signed professional terms in the summer, put the visitors ahead with a spectacular overhead kick.
He added a second with an exquisite curling 25-year free-kick, only for United to suffer a jolt when Del Fabro received a straight red card.
Ten minutes after the restart, the hosts pulled one back through Luke Thomas, only for Brian Montenegro to restore Leeds’ two-goal cushion with a neat volley.
Riera headed home to pull one back and the home pressure against ten men eventually told when Veldwijk nodded in at the near post moments before the end.
Chris Dawson, an unused substitute in the first-team clash with Blackpool on Saturday, featured for the under-21s along with keeper Eric Grimes.
Grimes has been called up by the Republic of Ireland U21s for their forthcoming friendly matches against the USA and Russia in Marbella.
Tweeting on getting ninety minutes under his belt, Dawson said: “Well needed 90 minutes, great effort from the boys after going down to ten.”
