USMNT’s Tyler Adams has relegation release clause in Leeds United contract - The Athletic 28/7/23

U.S. international midfielder Tyler Adams has a relegation
release clause as part of his Leeds United contract, sources with knowledge of
the deal tell The Athletic.
Adams arrived at Leeds from RB Leipzig last summer for a fee
of around £20 million up front plus add-ons. The relegation release clause is
believed to be in that region, per sources. Leeds finished 19th last season and
were relegated, rendering that release clause active.
The 24-year-old excelled in the Premier League, one of
Leeds’ bright spots in a disappointing season.
Adams has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since
March, making any potential transfer complicated at this time. Adams is
expected to be out through at least the September international window, meaning
he won’t be fit before the transfer windows close in Europe.
Adams made 24 appearances in the Premier League in his debut
season with Leeds.
Leeds, under new manager Daniel Farke, hope Adams stays for
the push for promotion in the Championship this year but this would be out of
their control if the release clause is met.
The Athletic reported last month that Aston Villa is
interested in Adams.
Adams began his career with the New York Red Bulls and was
transferred to RB Leipzig, where he made 103 appearances. He has 36 caps with
the USMNT and captained his country at the World Cup this winter.
As reported by The Athletic in May, U.S. teammate Brenden
Aaronson also has a relegation release clause in his Leeds contract. He has
since joined Union Berlin on loan for the 2023-24 season.
