Leeds United have secured a highly-rated youngster to a new three-year deal ahead of his involvement with the senior squad on their US pre-season trip.

Jayden Lienou has had a taste of men’s football with both club and country in the last few months. The 18-year-old joined Leeds from Manchester City last summer and was heavily involved with the Under-21s last season. But towards the end of the campaign Daniel Farke put the promising teenager on the bench for the games against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, after injury ruled out first-choice left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Lienou was then called up by Craig Bellamy for the Wales post-season camp and friendlies against Ghana and Romania. The left-sided defender earned rave reviews from Bellamy and was on the bench as an unused substitute for the Ghana game.

Leeds have announced that Lienou, who has been pictured in first team training from the outset of pre-season this summer and is expected to be on the flight to America today for the pre-season tour, has signed a new contract at Elland Road. A club statement said: “Leeds United are delighted to announce highly rated defender Jayden Lienou has signed a new three-year deal with the club. After impressing throughout a fine debut season with Scott Gardner’s Under-21s side, the leftback will now remain in West Yorkshire until 2029.

“Joining the club from Manchester City last summer, Lienou made 26 appearances for the U21s, which included gaining experience against senior opposition in the EFL Trophy and National League Cup. Regularly involved in first team training, the 18-year-old featured on the bench for Daniel Farke’s team in Premier League encounters with Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion towards the end of the campaign. Capped by Wales at Under-19 level, the defender’s form with club and country was then rewarded with a first senior call up to the Dragons squad in May where he appeared on the bench for a friendly with Ghana. Everyone at Leeds United would like to congratulate Jayden on signing a new deal and we are excited to see his continued development with the club.”

Farke made no secret of the club’s need to add more left-footed options to the squad at points last season, with Gabriel Gudmundsson his only natural senior left-back. The departure of Pascal Struijk was followed by the £34m signing of Tarik Muharemovic who will slot in at left-sided centre-back. But the Whites are also expected to explore potential options at left-back in the summer window.
