'I will never forget' — Isaac Schmidt shares heartfelt farewell message after Leeds United exit — Yorkshire Post 17/7/26

Isaac Schmidt has paid tribute to Leeds United following the end of his two-year spell at Elland Road.

The 26-year-old, a versatile full-back, arrived at Elland Road from St. Gallen in his native Switzerland late in the summer 2024 transfer window.

He was a bit-part player in Leeds’ Championship title-winning 2024/25 campaign, making 12 league appearances.

A loan move to Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen was sanctioned last year and Schmidt made 19 appearances in Germany’s top flight.

He was due back in England for pre-season following the expiry of his loan deal but instead returned to Switzerland, sealing a permanent switch to BSC Young Boys yesterday (July 16). Leeds have pocketed an undisclosed fee for the defender, who made 14 appearances for the Whites across all competitions.

Posting on Instagram, Schmidt said: “Dear Leeds United, teammates and staff, I will never forget those moments of pure emotions we had together, great team spirit on and off the pitch, with our unbelievable fans.

“I wish you all the best for the future. You will always be remembered. MOT.”

Well wishes from former Leeds teammates have flooded the comment section, with Anton Stach, Wilfried Gnonto and Joel Piroe among those to have sent warm messages.

Schmidt has followed defender Pascal Struijk out of door at Elland Road, with the latter having been lured to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Leeds have also parted with Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier following the expiry of their respective contracts. The goalkeepers have both secured contracts elsewhere, with Darlow now on Manchester United’s books and Meslier at Arsenal.

Leeds have also cut ties with some of their young players, allowing Connor Douglas, Marley Wilson and Lewis Piroe to seek pastures new.
