Leeds United and 49ers Enterprises stance on Joel Piroe as Celtic loan report emerges — YEP 16/1/26

By Graham Smyth

Reports suggesting Leeds United are in talks with Celtic over a loan move for Joel Piroe are wide of the mark, the YEP understands.

Piroe is a wanted man this month thanks to his Golden Boot exploits in the Championship last season and a finishing ability that his manager Daniel Farke describes as world class. Match minutes have been harder and harder to come by for Piroe at Leeds, however, thanks to the goalscoring form and performances of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Farke has preferred Lukas Nmecha and Noah Okafor as second strikers, with Piroe settling for a place on the bench.

Despite his current frustrations, Piroe is said to be determined to stay at Elland Road and prove his worth in the top flight. But there is significant interest in his services. A host of clubs in the Championship and abroad would like to prise him from Leeds, but the Whites insist they are not pushing him towards the exit door in January.

A report emerged on Friday north of the border suggesting Celtic were in talks for the Dutchman's services in a loan possibility. The YEP understands that no club-to-club talks have taken place however and that 49ers Enterprises in West Yorkshire would be unlikely in the extreme to do business that harmed the title chances of 49ers Enterprises in Glasgow, where they took control of Rangers last year.

As for suggestions that Celtic could match his wages, the YEP understands there are clubs in the Championship who could also do so, but it remains a fact that a loan deal would make little sense for the Whites. Leeds have made an enquiry for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen this month and their Profitability and Sustainability situation is tight, so a permanent sale would help balance the books. But as yet there is no change in Piroe's stance or the club's with regards to his immediate future.

Piroe joined Leeds from Swansea City in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth around £10m and he signed a four-year deal. In 109 appearances he has scored 33 goals and added 10 assists but is yet to find the net this season. The striker missed a penalty last weekend in a rare start in the FA Cup at Derby County.
