Report: Coventry City 0-2 Leeds United — Leedsunited.com 5/2/25

Leeds United recorded another important Sky Bet Championship victory, cruising past Coventry City 2-0 away from home thanks to first-half goals from Joël Piroe and Jayden Bogle!

When the game got going, the opening 10 minutes lacked clear chances at either end. The away side had pushed forwards and gained a couple of set-play opportunities, but the hosts defended in any way they could.

Jack Rudoni was the first player to test the ‘keeper at either end. He picked the ball up from Ellis Simms and shot powerfully on target, but Illan Meslier saved the effort comfortably.

When the chance did present itself it was finished in style from our top-scorer, who fired the Whites ahead in front of the travelling supporters, who had been lively from the start!

Good work from the midfield pressed Coventry backwards and that allowed Manor Solomon to pick up the ball and play Piroe through on goal, where he composed himself and smashed the ball low into the bottom corner!

Farke’s side remained on top and controlled the game, searching for a second, and it wouldn’t be long before they had another to double the lead!

Picking up the ball down the right-hand-side and venturing forward from his usual right-back position, Bogle kept going, and going, and going, and going, beating multiple Coventry defenders, before then finishing at close range!

The Sky Blues looked to hit back and did have a couple of efforts on goal. Victor Torp looked lively on the wing, he cut inside and shot, only to see his effort turned behind for a corner. From the resulting set-play, Meslier rose through bodies and cleared the danger.

Approaching the break and with the Whites firmly in control on the pitch and on the scoreline, they had two more good chances, both in a similar fashion.

Dan James was released in behind the defence and he looked to find Solomon at the back post, but a last-ditch defensive block cleared it away. Almost a carbon-copy of that chance then came for Piroe and he opted to take the shot on himself, but struck over the bar.

Dean Whitestone blew his whistle to end the half and send the teams back into their respective dressing rooms, with the Whites deservedly ahead.

HALF TIME: Coventry City 0-2 Leeds United

Back out at for the second half at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Frank Lampard had turned to his bench during the break, bringing on Tatsuhiro Sakamoto in place of Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Farke’s side returned to the pitch and were lively once more, starting quickly. Twice finding some room just outside the area, James took fire against Oliver Dovin’s goal, but the ‘keeper wasn’t tested this time.

Both number 1’s were then called into action and had to make top saves, at either end. Meslier superbly denied a Simms header at full stretch, whilst Dovin had to tip Solomon’s powerful strike around the post.

With around 20 minutes to play, Farke’s side still had a two-goal lead and the manager was watching the team work hard to stay in front, whilst searching for an opening to extend the lead further.

The home side though were sending players forward, as they looked to get back into the game. That led to chances on the counter-attack and Brenden Aaronson linked up with James but that wasn’t converted.

Moments later and Solomon was the next to be denied by Dovin when sent free, before the ‘keeper saved once more from Piroe after Solomon’s pass found him!

Changes then followed, as Largie Ramazani was introduced from the bench in place of Solomon who had been a problem for the hosts throughout the 78 minutes he was on for.

Straight into the action, Ramazani was the next to be denied by the Coventry ‘keeper. He got in behind the defence this time from Bogle’s pass, but again Dovin made the save.

As the game entered its dying stages, the action continued at either end. First, Meslier made another impressive reaction save to deny the Sky Blues from a corner, before Junior Firpo and Willy Gnonto thought they had combined to add a third, only to be denied by the assistant's flag.

The result keeps the Whites at the top of the Sky Bet Championship standings, as attentions now turn to Emirates FA Cup action this weekend with United entertaining Millwall at Elland Road.
