Tyler Adams has been named captain of the USMNT for the
World Cup.
Head coach Gregg Berhalter said: “For the last three and a
half years we’ve been working with the leadership council and we’re very open
with them and we asked them, ‘Hey, what do you guys want to do for the World
Cup?’
“And they thought it’d be better to have a captain named for
the World Cup. We’re proud to announce Tyler as the captain for the World Cup.
We think he has, you know, great leadership capabilities.
“He leads by his actions and his words, so we’re proud to
have him as a captain.”
The 23-year-old made his debut for the United States senior
men’s national team in 2017 and has been capped 32 times since his debut.
He has also played at a high level for clubs, winning the
MLS Supporters Shield in 2018 with New York Red Bulls, the German Cup with RB
Leipzig and competing in the Champions League with the latter side.
Adams has also impressed since moving to Leeds United in the
summer, where he joined fellow American Jesse Marsch — the head coach of the
Elland Road side.
He has played 13 games for Leeds, starring in midfield as
they beat both Chelsea and Liverpool in the early stages of the season.
The Wappinger, New York-born midfielder is defensively
minded and has scored just once for his nation — during a friendly match
against Mexico in 2018.
