Leeds owner Radrizzani backs Marsch and promises squad improvements - The Athletic 23/5/22

Leeds United owner and chairman Andrea Radrizzani has backed
head coach Jesse Marsch and promised to improve the playing squad during the
summer transfer window.
Leeds endured a testing second season back in the Premier
League and entered the final day of the campaign in the relegation zone.
The West Yorkshire club narrowly secured Premier League
survival on the final day of the season, as they beat Brentford 2-1 and Burnley
lost 2-1 to Newcastle United.
The 2021-22 season also saw Leeds part ways with popular
head coach Marcelo Bielsa, who was replaced by former RB Leipzig boss Jesse
Marsch in February.
Radrizzani, who has owned Leeds since 2017, acknowledged
Leeds’ tough season in the wake of their win at Brentford on Sunday.
“This has been a painful season for everyone, from the board
to the fans in the stands, the changing room to the ticket office, it has been
a battle,” the 47-year-old said.
“The campaign has been blighted by serious injuries to key
players and having to make an unplanned managerial change was an incredibly
tough decision.”
Leeds finished the season in 17th on 38 points, 21 fewer
than they managed in 2020-21 when they secured a ninth-placed finish.
Their small squad has battled with serious injuries all
season, with Patrick Bamford, Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips among those who
missed significant periods.
“Staying in the Premier League was our objective this year
and we’ve managed to obtain our top-flight status, but this is not success and
improvements are needed,” Radrizzani added.
“As a board, we will work hard with Jesse Marsch this summer
to improve the squad and find a way to deliver the kind of performances you all
deserve.
“We believe that with time and a full pre-season, Jesse will
be the man to take this club forward.”
Marsch accumulated 15 points from 12 matches as Leeds head
coach. Bielsa had taken 23 points from 26 games.
The Athletic reported on Sunday, that having secured Premier
League survival, Leeds are to sign Brendan Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg this
summer for a fee believed to be around $28 million.
