Leeds United have launched an attempt to sign Chesterfield's Liam Cooper, but the League One side are holding out for £1 million for the centre-back
Leeds United have seen an attempt to sign Chesterfield’s Liam Cooper rebuffed, according to BBC Radio Leeds.
Leeds are understood to be keen on signing Cooper and have made a bid for the defender’s services, but they have seen their offer rejected by the League One side as it falls below their valuation.
Chesterfield are demanding £1 million for their prized asset and are determined to keep hold of him as the plot for another successful campaign after achieving promotion from League Two last year.
He could be lined up a replacement for Tom Lees, who looks set to move on to Sheffield Wednesday.
Lees has struggled to make a positive impression in recent times and it looks as if his time at Elland Road may be coming to an end.
The signing of Cooper would certainly compensate for this and would fill the hole left in the squad if Lees was to depart.
Cooper came through the academy at Hull, but saw his time at the now Premier League club cut short in 2013, when he completed a move to Chesterfield.
Leeds should have no problem finding the cash required to prise him away should they so want to, either, due to the influx of money they received for Ross McCormack earlier in the summer.
However, The Spirities’ asking price for Cooper is high and there is a determination from Leeds not to pay over the odds this transfer window, despite having a major increase in funds.
Cooper would become the Whites’ sixth summer signing if he was to join Elland Road, in what has been a busy summer for the club so far.
They are also reportedly close to agreeing a deal for AC Milan midfielder Zan Benedicic, and his loan move could be completed within the next couple of days.
